Is MathType Still Necessary Now That We Have AI?

The biggest reason people used to learn MathType was speed and accuracy: typing complex equations by hand was faster and cleaner than the default Equation Editor. Now AI can produce that same equation in seconds — so does that reason still hold up?
What AI has already replaced
The “build the equation from scratch” part — where you used to type it yourself, memorize symbol syntax, and manually line up fractions, roots, and exponents. Now you just describe it in words and AI hands back a correct equation almost instantly. “Getting fast at LaTeX syntax” — one of the main reasons people invested time in learning MathType — is no longer the mandatory advantage it used to be.
What AI hasn't replaced
- Mandatory format requirements. Some academic journals, publishers, and universities still require submissions in proper MathType format and won't accept a default Word Equation or any other format — AI doesn't change that requirement.
- Older documents already written in MathType. Textbooks and question banks built up over years — new equations added to them need to match the existing format, or the document ends up mixing two different standards and looking inconsistent.
- Not every AI outputs MathType. Even when an AI gets the equation right, what it hands back is still LaTeX text — pasting that straight into Word doesn't turn it into MathType on its own; it still needs a conversion step.
So what's the right way to think about this?
AI has replaced “typing equations by hand”, but it hasn't replaced the MathType format that many places still require. In other words, the question isn't “should I still learn MathType” anymore — it's “how do I get the equation AI just generated into proper MathType format without retyping it by hand.” That's the gap between the two — MathType itself isn't obsolete.
