Converting LaTeX to MathType in Word: Click to Edit, Every Time

“Converting LaTeX to Word” sounds like one thing — but what you actually end up with can be 4 completely different results, and only one of them is truly usable long-term: a MathType equation you can click into and edit. This post walks through those 4 outcomes so you understand why MathCopy is built to always produce that one specific result.
4 kinds of “equation in Word”
1. Still raw LaTeX text. Copy-pasted straight from ChatGPT or a .tex document with no processing — Word just receives characters like \frac{a}{b} — not an equation, just text.
2. An equation image (picture). Some tools convert LaTeX into a PNG image and insert that into Word. Looks correct, but it's a static image: not a single symbol is editable, it pixelates when scaled up, and its size won't automatically stay in sync with surrounding text if you change the document's font.
3. A regular Word Equation (OMML format). This is Word's native equation format — editable, double-click to edit, but it's a different standard from MathType. If your document already has MathType equations, or wherever you're submitting only accepts MathType, a Word Equation doesn't solve that problem.
4. An actual MathType equation. A genuine equation object in proper MathType format — double-click it to edit just like a hand-typed equation, matching the font and style of every other MathType equation in the document.
Why it has to specifically be MathType, not “any equation format will do”
- Many universities and academic journals require manuscripts in MathType and won't accept the default Word Equation.
- Older documents — textbooks, question banks — are usually already entirely in MathType; new content needs to match that format, and can't be an image or a mismatched Word Equation.
- Only MathType (or Word Equation) stays editable afterward — an image has to be deleted and redone from scratch if there's a mistake.
