LaTeX-to-Word Converters: Which One Should You Use?

“A LaTeX-to-Word converter” is really an umbrella term for a handful of quite different solutions — different to use, and different in the equation format they actually produce. This post compares them honestly, including the cases where MathCopy isn't the best choice.

1. Word's built-in LaTeX mode

Free, nothing to install. Type or paste LaTeX syntax into the equation box and Word rebuilds it automatically. The output is a Word Equation (OMML) — editable, but not MathType.

Good fit if: you don't need proper MathType formatting, and you only type the occasional equation.

2. Online LaTeX-to-image converters

Plenty of sites let you paste LaTeX and export a PNG or SVG image to drop into Word. Looks right immediately, but it's a static image: nothing is editable, it pixelates when scaled up, and the font won't stay in sync with the surrounding text if you change the document's font later.

Good fit if: the equation only needs to be displayed, not edited later (for example, in a slide or a screenshot).

3. MathType (Toggle TeX)

A paid Word add-in with a feature that types LaTeX and converts it into a real MathType equation — proper format, fully editable afterward. Requires knowing LaTeX syntax and working through a separate dialog for each equation.

Good fit if: you're already comfortable with LaTeX syntax and don't mind retyping each equation.

4. MathCopy

Copy an equation from ChatGPT, Gemini, a LaTeX document, or anywhere else, and paste it straight into Word with Ctrl + Alt + V. Produces an actual MathType object, no LaTeX knowledge needed, no retyping. Runs locally on your machine — nothing is sent to any server.

Good fit if: you need proper MathType formatting, have a lot of equations to handle, or don't know LaTeX syntax.
